CMDB - Configuration Management Database
Many of TriParadigm software products are dependent upon the
configuration management database (CMDB) for information about the
configuration and architecture of the computer systems, networking,
applications, sofware, and users. This database provides information
that is used for the purpose of business continuity, disaster recovery,
high availability, virtualization, document management, patch
management, and the automated build and deployment of new systems.
TriParadigm's view of a CMDB is somewhat different from other
organizations, we view the CMDB as the source of configuration
information, not just as a repository. This means that when
configuration changes to a computer system are required, the changes
should entered into the CMDB and pushed out to the affected systems.
This is the opposite of the way a CMDB is normally used by most
organizations. With most CMDB implementations, configuration changes
are first made at the system level, then an agent or daemon discovers
the changes and the CMDB is updated as a reflection of the current
system.
The TriParadigm CMDB is truly a Configuration
Management database, in that it manages and
performs the system changes. This unique capability is one of the
enabling components for many of TriParadigm's other products.
