"Orwell" is a platform independent set of programs and utilities that provide the system administrator with an automated method of implementing a Disaster Recovery (DR) plan. This automation allows an organization to utilize personnel resources that may or may not be familiar with the targeted computer systems as they existed before the disaster. This is because the configuration and architecture information for the targeted computer systems is gathered and stored in remote disaster recovery locations on a periodic basis. If a disaster occurs, a system administrator is able to automate a build or rebuild process based on the stored configurations.
Restoration of bulk storage can be performed by a variety of mechanisms including synchronous or asynchronous replication to remote data centers, copying log files, tape backup, or other mechanisms. The bulk storage replication is normally configured as an automated process performed on a continuous or periodic basis.
"Orwell" is usually configured as an automated process to gather the system configuration an architecture information. The gathering process typically occurs daily, but may be scheduled according to the needs and requirements of the customer.
The disaster recovery restoration of systems can be an automated process, but typically requires management declaration of a disaster, before any "Orwell" DR activities begin.
